There is no one-size-fits-all way for 3D visualization of any kind. There are many ways, spanning different applications, project timelines and budgets.

The following are the main types of 3D modeling you should be familiar with for any architectural modeling project.

Wireframe

If you’re looking for a simple and effective tool to create a quick presentation of a simple design, wireframe is the tool to go with. You might also come across the modeling name edge, but it’s basically the same thing. Wireframe involves outlining a 3D object and filling in the space between the lines or “wires” using polygons.
visualize the project in 3D.

3D CAD modeling

Architects and designers use 3D CAD modeling to create 3D drawings of anything from simple houses to skyscrapers. The fact is that Computer Aided Design (CAD) uses a complex algorithm to turn two-dimensional drawings into three-dimensional structures.

CAD models are mathematically precise, which makes them ideal for visualizing exteriors. So, designers can easily incorporate materials, change colors and add any design elements. Not surprisingly, you’ll find CAD modeling used in a wide variety of exterior rendering services.

BIM modeling

BIM stands for Building Information Models and is the oldest type of 3D modeling. It is also one of the most intelligent and sophisticated types that allow architects, engineers and builders to work together on a single project.

The reason BIM is so popular in architectural modeling is because it allows designers to generate and edit both the physical and functional features of a project.

Also, unlike any other architectural CGI, it allows you to work on the entire building and interior, including spatial relationships, infrastructure, lighting, etc. Consequently, BIM is universal in terms of all phases of planning and construction.

3D interior modeling

To best demonstrate the selling points of design and present the project to investors, designers resort to 3D interior modeling. No technical intricacies. Just making the overall look of the design look great. It includes placing contextual decor, adjusting lights and colors, creating furniture pieces, etc.

CGI exterior modeling

Although exterior design in architectural modeling has the same principle as interior design, just looking great is not enough to attract investors. The image must do more than just look flawless. It has to cover the points of sustainability, optimization and infrastructure.

The amount of software is not the only product of the evolution of architectural modeling. The variety of designs has grown, too. Architects and designers can create custom models, panoramas, interior and exterior designs, and animations.

Here are the most popular ones.

Architectural rendering

This is one of those architectural modeling products, which allows you to demonstrate and convey the mood of the interior and exterior of the future home. These renderings depict the completed object in reality with an extreme level of realism.

Interactive 3D Panoramas

As the name implies, the viewer can move around the picture to see every corner of the project. This is much better than still views because it immerses clients in the panoramas and provides a better understanding of the design.

CG animation

This option is the best if you want people to see what it’s like to move around their future home or building. CG animations are like videos showing you every feature of the project. The only difference is the scene is created in three-dimensional space, it has yet to be built in real life.

To create all these amazing projects, you have to learn different tools and types of modeling.

When 3D modeling first appeared, it was not at all what we know it to be now. And its value to architectural modeling has been underestimated for some time.

This brief overview of the history of 3D modeling for architecture and design should give you more insight.

The beginning: the 1960s

The history of 3D modeling begins with. Sketchpad, a program that could read drawings made with a light pen, invented by Sutherland in 1963. Sketchpad could create many similar drawings based on the main drawing. In addition, it could correct all of them when any changes were made to the main drawing.

Seemingly nothing to do with 3D modeling, right?

The stunning 3D designs we can see now have been evolving for decades.

First Steps: 1990-2000

Since 3D modeling became more popular, it’s no longer just used for advertising and television. Many industries have incorporated it, including design and architecture. In particular, this changed with the release of many 3D modeling programs in the 1990s. The first versions of today’s Autodesk 3d Max, Cinema 4D, Blender and Maya appeared around that time.

Around the same time NURBS modeling began to evolve. Although the first models were low poly and unrealistic, it was a whole new level for architecture and design that no one could even imagine.

Gaining popularity: 2000-2010

Over the next decade, the popularity of CGI in architectural modeling only progressed. It opened up many new possibilities and functionalities for designers. Computer graphics programs became even more advanced.

In particular, Autodesk 3d Max introduced the Fur & Hair module and new materials such as wool and glass. Autodesk Revit, a very popular program among engineers and architects, was released at this time. As 3D became more photorealistic, many rendering programs were also released during this period.

Total Success: 2010-2020

In the last decade, the concept of 3D architectural modeling has become universally accepted. You won’t meet a single designer or architect who doesn’t use 3D for rendering. Now you can find not only a variety of software, but also many 3D rendering services used in architectural design.

Architectural modeling now uses more textures, materials and lighting effects to create high-quality designs. You can hardly tell the difference between 3D design and real photographs.

If you had been told a few years ago that walking through your future home would be possible before the first brick was even laid, would you have believed it? The digital era of 3D modeling has drawn new opportunities for architects and builders.

Nowadays, Architectural Visualization does not need drawings or physical models to present a future project. Architectural modeling has become more effective with 3D because it helps convey the concept better. Models are more informative, more realistic and more appealing.

Today we’re going to look into the evolution of architectural modeling and discuss the benefits and most popular types of 3D modeling for use in architecture.

However, let’s first define what architectural modeling is.

What is 3D architectural modeling?

3D architectural modeling is the process of creating a 3-dimensional mathematical representation of a building, exterior or interior design in 3 stages: visualization, construction and rendering. Architectural modeling in 3D allows designers to create a project of any type, scale, complexity or material.

The biggest advantage of 3D architectural modeling is that it allows you to cover both the interior and exterior of a project. It also makes it easy to update or replace some design elements before the process goes live.

However, this is not the only advantage.

Creating construction and design plans the old way is time-consuming. Not to mention the time spent on updates and changes. Because of this, 3D modeling has tremendous potential for architecture:

  • Accuracy 一 3D modeling allows designers to achieve accurate measurements of an entire building or the smallest details of a structure.
  • Speed 一 Modeling and drafting time is greatly reduced, making designers more efficient.
  • Detail 一 3D allows artists to work through any level of detail, regardless of the scale of the project.
  • Efficiency 一 With 3D, architects can detect potential errors, gain insight into sur1TP19T patterns, and visualize custom interiors.
  • Animation 一 3D allows you to take virtual walkthroughs, take virtual tours of your home, and look at your future project from different perspectives and viewpoints.
